Sword Training Provider - Adrian Paul
April 29th – May 1st, 2022
Welcome to the Sword Experience Retreat at the Tusculum Farm April 29th-May 1st. This incredible location we have selected for you was built in 1747. The Farm House was originally the Freeman Family home and has been refurbished to maintain its history while offering luxurious guest suites for you to relax in while taking in the spectacular views.
We have created wonderful all-inclusive packages that include everything you might need for an exciting Sword Experience retreat weekend. There will be seminars from stunt and entertainment professionals. Sword cutting displays, sword training, accommodations, meals, and all non-alcoholic drinks, along with a professionally cut video and photos for you to keep.
But that’s not all. As a reminder of the weekend, you will also receive a unique retreat bokken, along with other unique items in a SXP gift bag valued at more than $170.
So we look forward to seeing you at our first 2022 retreat at Tusculum Farm. For more details on all our packages please see below, but don’t delay because spaces are limited and are on a first come basis.
“Emotional Content for Action Heroes” – Dylan Hintz
In this workshop you will work on the basics of using unarmed combat with out-of-distance punches and reactions for the camera. There will also be a “Danger Zone” & “Movement Provocation” section where you will be asymmetrically armed and practice out-of-distance dodges and attacks. The goal of this workshop is to help you build up partnering, cuing, and “action acting” skills, and to increase your ability to maintain presence and awareness of your situation through both choreographed and randomized attack patterns.
Visualizing Your Reality – Adrian Paul
Adrian Paul has created a short unique kata for the SXP retreat that he will teach in a minimum of two sessions during the Saturday program. The movements taken from the Sword Experience numbering system will then have added intentions added, switching from one direction to another as is fighting real opponents. By understanding attack angles and visualizing opponents, will not only give the kata a realistic look, but allow you to react to real or choreographed situations more effectively.
The Edge of Reality – JB Jaeger
This training session will allow you to experience the exigencies of actual fighting through a series of counter-for-counter drills that evolve into a free flow. You will come away understanding the emotions that you experience in actual competition or fighting. You will learn how to deal with the fear of the unknown and act in the moment. You will also experience how certain angles, defenses, and responses work together. All of this will give your choreography design and performance…the edge of reality.

The Farm House at Tusculum Farm (historically referred to as the Griffith-Hutton House) is a beautiful and historic 2 ½ story cross gable stone and frame structure. According to Maryland government historical records, “The oldest part of the house is known to be the principal stone wing, though the frame attached to it may occupy the site of an earlier log structure, and even incorporate aspects of it into its walls. Tradition holds that the original log house on the property was built in 1747 by Henry Griffith. The stone wing (today’s main block) was added circa 1797.”
Carriage houses, by tradition, were originally built to house horse drawn carriages on a farm. Today, these structures have been modified to everything from guest houses, to offices, to garages, to suites, etc. On Tusculum Farm, the “carriage house” is a five bedroom, 3 bathroom house that makes for the perfect getaway with family or friends. The house comes with a full kitchen and a continental breakfast upon arrival to enjoy your first morning along with a dozen eggs from our own chickens!
“The Coop” is our version of a private apartment that you can enjoy away from the main house. Perfect for people looking for some solitude, or to takeover their own space. This impressive set-up (2 bedrooms, 2 baths) includes a balcony overlooking the farm. Access to the rest of the farm includes amenities such as our outdoor pool, screened in porch, and never-ending spectacular views. Be sure to ask about a tour with Farmer Joel to meet all the animals and learn a little more the history of Tusculum Farm.
